Today in Western Civ, we took notes on Ancient Greece. We learned that there was an exclusive club with the upper class citizens. In this group, there were no women, unless they were there for entertainment purposes. There were no middle class citizens, because they weren't as wealthy and couldn't make the high end decisions like the upperclassmen could. And there were certainly no slaves allowed in the exclusive club. Sometimes, even certain Aristocrats were excluded from the group. Sometimes Aristocrats would form alliances with hoplites and set up an alternative form of government called Tyranny. A tyrant was someone who rules outside the framework of Polis. However, the modern meaning of tyrant is an abusive or obsessive ruler.
